Brief history of KCC:

Cambodia is a developing country located in Southeast Asia in southwestern part of Indochina Peninsula. Together with Laos and Vietnam, Cambodia is part of what was formerly known as Indochina. The country has population (1997 official estimate) of 12,000,000. The population is more than 85 percent rural. Theravada (Hinayana) Buddhism is the state religion of Cambodia, and 90 percent of the people are Buddhists. Buddhist temples are found everywhere, even at the village level. They are well kept and the monks are well cared for by the populace. The state protects Buddhism and Buddhism is expected to support government. Christians are the minority, and the number of Christians is less than one percent.

In 1993 after World Church Council withdrew its office in Cambodia, but WCC considered continuing to assist the churches through Cambodia Ecumenical Center which was organized. In during that time it has the volunteer staffs, Ms Keo Serey Vunthy and Rev. Eang Chhun. Since 1994 WCC had been supported Cambodian Christian Youth Association in their development stage, and also Cambodia Christian Women Association under the leadership of Yos Em Sithan. They had fellowships and meeting at the Cambodia Ecumenical Center. In addition, Dr. Matthews George Chunakara played a very important role in facilitating the development of Cambodian church leaders, strengthening ecumenical understanding, and engaging the churches of Asia in issues concerning Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

Kampuchea Christian Council is the ecumenical council that opened to any denomination, any denominational church, and any Christian association and organization (both local and international) that established in Cambodia.

Unity among Cambodia Churches is the first and most important concerns and criteria which church

leaders have to deal with and is very much needed for every Christian in the present as well as in the future.

KCC was formed to meet the need of Cambodia churches in order to witness the oneness of our God that the churches should not be divided into groups, but to have unity in Christ. Since 2007, KCC has been working in unities with Churches in Cambodia, and now currently KCC increases the members eighty Churches (Twelve Churches in Phnom Penh and Sixty eight in Provinces )
